Michael Watches Hatsumi Sensei

Hatsumi Sensei recently shared with us a little book or scroll that describes using Metsubushi to conceal yourself or disappear in the mist (目潰霧隠れの豆本 metsubushi kirigakure no mamehon). It reads:

Throwing Metsubushi

For the purpose of blinding target one spot, then target your throws in a few directions, throwing to several points, and respond using henka. When surrounded, toss and throw the metsubushi in four directions, then as you change keep throwing on this plane spreading the dust in eight directions.

start with the kamae of Santo Tonkō (this is like a fleeing mouse, and is part of our Togakure Ryu Ninjutsu study) and the kamae of metsubushi nage.

It is not sufficient just to throw the metsubushi powder

By using taihenjutsu, you can be accurate with the art of targeting metsubushi.

forwards, backwards, left, right, and in all directions around the circle, use this body changing art to strike into the eyes, nose, and mouth

Michael’s commentary: As always, it is really impossible to learn our art from books. Hopefully you have trained with a qualified instructor with 鼠逃遁甲の型 Santo Tonkō no Kata since it makes up some of the kihon of Ninjutsu! Also the taihenjutsu described here is very specific to this situation and must be specifically studied as well. You may see some of it in Soke’s videos, but there is nothing like learning in person.
