Part of the etiquette of training in a good dojo and with good training partners is layed out clearly for us in the 棒術 boujutsu of Kukishin Ryu.

Training starts with a bow and the expression,

“御手柔らかに oteyawarakani”

This means don’t be too hard on me, or go easy on me, or please use a soft hand. In other words, “Please don’t hurt me!”

Good students should honor this etiquette whether or not it is said.
