my Bujinkan video exploring 短刀 Tantō Themes from Japan. In recent years, Hatsumi Sensei taught knife in almost every class. While I trained with him, A few themes began to emerge.

my Bujinkan video exploring the Bujinkan strategy of 霞より居合 Kasumi Yori Iai. We began with 体変術無刀捕 taihenjutsu mutōdori as a warmup. But here we also establish the basic sword drawing distance.

my Bujinkan video exploring the Bujinkan kata 一撃 Ichigeki. We began class with a warmup using 体変術無刀捕型 Taihenjutsu Mutōdori Gata. There are three of these, along with some natural henka.

We continue to explore the Gikan Ryū waza as taught by Noguchi Sensei in Japan. 其の九 Sono Kyū is a mutō dori. Noguchi called our starting kamae ichimonji, but he did it almost like seigan. You evade the cut, then strike and throw.

my Bujinkan video sharing some connections Hatsumi Sensei made for me regarding Marishiten. During on Tuesday night in the Bujinkan Honbu, I ran to grab a bokken from the weapon rack. When I returned, my training partner was waiting for my attack so he could try the muto dori technique that Soke had just demonstrated.

my Bujinkan video as we continue with our warmup series focusing on 体変術無刀捕型 Taihenjutsu Mutōdori Gata.
I reminded my students that if you get in a sword fight and you don’t get cut, you are doing it wrong! Of course, this is kind of joke but it does suggest the proper attitude for muto dori.

we continue with our warmup series focusing on 八文字振り Hachimonji Furi and Ukemi with the hanbō. We practiced rolling with the weapon from 膝行 shikkō. This improves form, kamae, and strengthening of the legs and hips.
Rolling with any weapon requires that you have full control over your own body. The weapon should not be an encumbrance, or obstacle for your roll. This can only happen through practice and perfection of ukemi.

My Bujinkan video with the latest training updates from Japan. The weather in Chiba prefecture has been cold and rainy. I have been studying with many instructors, but this report primarily focuses on what is happening in Hatsumi Sensei’s classes.
