I started the class by asking everyone to review basic 手解 tehodoki. With something as basic as tehodoki, there is a LOT of kuden. It is surprising how something so simple can only be taught in person, through direct experience.

my Bujinkan video exploring 手解 Tehodoki with 片手内回 Katate Uchi Mawashi and 片手外回 Katate Soto Mawashi. The first kanji in tehodki means “hand”. The second comes from 解ける hodokeru which means to to come untied, to come apart, or unravel. But we normally translate tehodoki as wrist escapes.

We began class with 伏虎(一)Hu ko (ichi). The name of this kata can be traced back to Chinese martial arts and suggests the crouching tiger form. When you compare kamae, you will definitely see this.

We warmed up with 八方蹴り happō geri. We continue our study of 破術九法 hajutsu kyūhō with 蹴砕 keri kudaki. There are four basic forms to this kihon. The first is a 蹴り打ち keri uchi against a punch. It is important that after you kill the punch this way, you fill the vacuum this creates in...

We warmed up with 五行の型 gogyō no kata. Then I showed variations using hanbō 三心の構 sanshin no kamae. My training partners were very surprised by the henka I did with 無念無想の構 munen muso no kamae for 空の型 kū no kata. We continue our study of 破術九法 hajutsu kyūhō with 腰砕き koshi kudaki. This means breaking...
